I Just Got Engaged, Now What? The First 10 Things You Need to Do

You just got engaged? Congratulations! Getting engaged is so exciting; from the moment you say “yes” and put that ring on your finger, your life as changed! But it can also be overwhelming. There are so many things to do and it’s hard to know where to start. We’ve made it easy for you: these are the first 10 things you need to do once you’re engaged.

Soak it in!

You just got engaged! Take some time to be happy with your fiancé/fiancée and really feel all of the emotions. It can be so tempting to start shouting the good news all over social media, but it’s important to savor the proposal moment for a bit.

Spread the news!

No, not on social media yet! First, call your family. Maybe even FaceTime them. Tell them how excited you are and send some ring pics. Then, tell your friends you just got engaged. We like the idea of calling close friends as well, so they can share in your joy almost “in person” too! Once you’ve done that, put it on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok…you name it. Let everyone know that a new chapter in your life is about to begin.

Insure & size your ring

So, we’re taking a break from all the excitement to focus on this practicality. While you’ll hopefully never need it, it’s better to have the insurance and not use it than not get it and wish you had. Similarly, your ring might not be exactly the right size for you. Get it sized as soon as you can so you don’t risk all that money falling off your hand and rolling away forever.

Pick a date

While you might not need to pick an exact date right away, it’s good to start thinking about when you want to get married. The date might be a few years from your engagement, or it could be a few months! Regardless, you’ll want to have a time frame set. As it gets closer, narrow your time frame down to a season and month, so that when you start looking at wedding venues you’ll know if their availability works for you.

Research dresses

You just got engaged, and after the ring and the date, everyone will be asking you what type of wedding dress you want! There are so many options, from the designer to the dress style, that it can seem overwhelming at first. But sites like Pinterest or Instagram can be really helpful for discovering what styles you’re most interested in. And when dresses catch your eye, make sure to take a screenshot or save a picture! This will help you later on.

Scope out trunk shows

If you’re new to the wedding dress world, you might have never heard of trunk shows before! But they’re a great way to see many dresses at once, especially if you know you like a specific designer’s style. During trunk shows, designers bring their entire newest collection to bridal salons–and usually these collections aren’t even available in salons yet! Browse the upcoming trunk shows are our luxury bridal salon, LBR Bridal, at both our Chicago and Miami locations to see if any of the designers catch your eye.

Make an appointment at a bridal salon

This one doesn’t get talked about a lot, but it’s crucial! Once you get into the thick of wedding planning, you won’e have time to relax. Between picking a venue, finding a dress, choosing place settings, discovering that perfect first dance song, and everything else, your life will be all about your wedding.
